Life doesn’t always pause neatly after an emergency ambulance ride. Vehicles are left behind. Family members are stranded. Pets and children need to get home. Recovery requires additional transport between care facilities. And sometimes the hospital stay itself becomes the beginning of a logistical challenge.
MASA Assist helps solve those real-world problems.
Below are several ways members use MASA Assist features that go beyond the emergency itself.
Rides for the road to recovery
Recovery often requires more than one stop.
After an emergency hospitalization, members may need transport between medical facilities for continued care — whether that means moving to a rehabilitation center, a skilled nursing facility, hospice care, or simply returning home.
With Post-Admission Continued Care Transport Protection, MASA Assist reimburses eligible expenses (up to $500 USD) for non-emergency transport between care locations.
That might include:
- Transport from the hospital to a rehabilitation center
- Transport to a skilled nursing facility
- Transport for follow-up care
- Transport back home once discharge is approved
These transportation needs often fall outside traditional health insurance coverage, yet they’re a routine part of recovery. MASA Assist helps bridge that gap.
Getting your companion home
Should a spouse, partner, friend, or family member be present during a medical emergency, they may need to return home to manage work, care for children, or prepare for the member’s recovery.
If a member is hospitalized, MASA Assist can help coordinate and cover eligible expenses for Companion Return Transport. This feature allows the member’s companion to return home while the member continues receiving care, helping to relieve stress for families.
When kids or pets are left behind
One of the most overlooked consequences of an emergency transport is what happens to dependents who were with you. A parent transported by ambulance might leave a minor or pet temporarily unattended and in need of transport.
That’s why MASA Assist offers Pet Return Transport Protection and Minor Return Transport Protection, features designed to help coordinate and pay eligible expenses to safely return a minor (under 18) to a parent, guardian, or responsible adult if they are left unattended due to an ambulance transport.
This type of support can make a critical difference during an already stressful moment, ensuring loved ones are safely cared for while the member focuses on recovery.
When your vehicle is left behind
Imagine you’re hundreds of miles from home when a medical emergency occurs. An ambulance takes you to the nearest hospital, but your car, RV, or rental vehicle is still sitting in a parking lot far away.
In these moments, the priority is your health — not arranging how your vehicle gets home.
With features like Vehicle and RV Return, MASA Assist helps coordinate and cover the cost of returning your owned vehicle to your residence or your rental vehicle to the rental company. That includes the costs associated with a qualified driver, fuel, and other necessary logistics.
For many members, this feature prevents what would otherwise become a complicated and expensive problem. Instead of arranging transport companies, flights, or long-distance drives while recovering, the situation is handled for you.
Whether you’re near home, on a nearby island, or the mainland — this feature can prevent what would otherwise become a complicated and expensive problem. Instead of arranging transport while recovering, you can rely on MASA Assist for support.
Real-world situations members encounter
While every situation is unique, MASA Assist features often come into play in scenarios like these:
- Transport between islands 🏝️
A couple experiences a medical emergency while off-island. One partner is transported to a hospital while their rental vehicle remains at the airport. MASA Assist helps coordinate returning the vehicle while also assisting with transportation needs during recovery. - A hospital stay while away from home 🏠
A member is hospitalized while more than 100 miles from home — perhaps while visiting another island or while overseas. Their companion returns home to prepare for the member’s recovery while MASA Assist helps coordinate the logistics. - A parent transported by ambulance 👶
A parent is transported unexpectedly, leaving a minor temporarily without supervision. MASA Assist helps coordinate transportation so the child can safely return to a guardian. - Recovery after discharge 🚐
A member leaves the hospital but must attend multiple follow-up care visits. MASA Assist helps reimburse eligible transport for continued care.
Support that extends beyond the ambulance
Emergency transport protection is the core of MASA Assist membership, but the experience of members shows something important: The challenges surrounding a medical event often extend well beyond the ambulance ride itself.
Transportation logistics, family needs, and other aspects of recovery can create unexpected stress and expenses — especially when members are away from home. MASA is designed to help members navigate those moments with confidence and peace of mind, relying on our coordinated support and financial protection.
